I HATE CATERPILLARS
LOOK WHAT I FOUND THEM DOING TO MY POOR DENDROBIUM
THEY FRIGGIN' GANG UP ON THIS ONE PARTICULAR PLANT
not that I want them on any of my other plants, because I don't, but THIS IS RIDICULOUS. THIS ONE IS A BABY AND IT NEEDS ALL THE PHOTOSYNTHESIS IT CAN GET

Caterpillars, or slugs/snails?
Just asking because the controls are different. If you have seen caterpillars, then Bacillus thuringiensis (BT), widely sold under various trade names, will take care of them.
Slugs/snails have previously eaten Dendrobiums I have had in the past (if you don't see them, they may still leave a shiny snail trail in the pot or on the plant).

It is caterpillars. I saw them. These things just suddenly showed up a couple days ago! I'm not even sure where they're coming from. I haven't had a chance to take pictures of them, but they're mostly green and they have long white hairs.

Probably fall webworm or a relative. Try the BT. Good luck!

The one with the flower? That's a Gymnocalycium mihanovichii. You usually see them in stores in tacky bright red or yellow colors (due to lack of chlorophyll), grafted onto Hylocereus. I got this one because it didn't have any of that nonsense going on; it was just dark-colored and potted like a normal cactus. Hardly had any roots, but that problem fixed itself eventually.
It's been putting up flowers all summer. |

Fall webworms feed mainly on treed and shrubs. I don't see why they would choose dendrobium? Even then, there would be webs or at least one caterpillar to be found.
I would be a bit skeptical to say its a caterpillar, since many are monophagous. Even then, it should be very unlikely to find a local caterpillar that would feed on dendrobiums, unless you live within the range of dendrobiums or any related orchids. |

yes caterpillars are devastating to some orchids. What happens is a moth will lay eggs somewhere close by, the babies hatch out and start their feeding. For me they prefer the softer leaved Dens and also my Masdies, leaves and blooms.
Orchid Whisperer my water always has BT in it and it doesn't seem to kill them. The Bayer insecticide will eliminate them.
