Native Florida Orchids article - Orchid Board

For those of you in Florida or elsewhere and have interest, I just received my Orchids magazine and it has a great article about South Florida native species that bloom in January.

Thanks so much for thinking of me, I don't get that magazine, but I will look for it at boarders. Great reason to go to one of my favorite stores.

I am new to orchids. I am very interested in native Florida plants especially ones that are becoming rare and/or hard to find. I have quite a collection that I am helping to preserve at my families homestead in Gainesville area. Now that I am getting into orchids I want to do the same and I am being ambitious and want to work my way to such elusive orchids as the Ghost Orchid. I also will be collecting others along the way. So any pointers in the right direction are gladly welcomed..

Hey Benjamin, There's a great book that will more than wet your appetite if you don't already have it..."Wild Orchids of Florida by Paul Matin Brown...I highly reccomend it.

Hi Benjamin, Most of all the Florida native's are available commerically. Most of Florida's orchids are endangered so I please don't remove any from the wild. As Joe suggested WOofF is a great book. Good luck and We would love to see your collection.

I will be acquiring that book and no I would NEVER NEVER NEVER remove one from the wild.....I am a Florida Cracker for those that do not know that means my family has been here for at least 150 years or 6 generations I think, I am all about preserving the Florida of yester year and am saddened to see what was common sight a few years ago is rare now.......

Benjamin, I am glad to hear you say that. Welcome to the board, by the way.

My family is all located in the Tamps/St Pete/Pinallas Park area. I am the lone one that went elsewhere when young. I definitely agree with you about the changes. Sooooo many things have changed over the years. Lots for the better, lots for the worse. The drive out to Ft Desoto Park would just about bring tears to anyone having driven that 20-30 years ago.
