I did another one called Two Laelias (pink).....it turned out very lame, tho I kept it. I would be happy to send those two to anyone interested! No need to fiddle with them, I have them with different placements and background colors....but I always use black, made the others at the request of friends. And, if you make yr desktop black it all works perfectly on matter the proportions of yr screen. ____________________ Edit: I get you were playin....but truth is, I already have put up several pics of my actual orchids.:) |

Indeed! I relate to your eye! Hold on, instead of getting work done, I will now look for images of mine....along with most of my Phals it bloomed at the usual time this past winter. K....found a not so good one, but you will get a good idea. If I try to make pics of them all at the same time, I can't get far enough away from the table to get them all in, so I put them in groups of 3-4. The only shortcoming of mine, and believe me, I ain't no kinda ingrate, is the flower placement on the inflorescence could be better. But all of my Phals were found in the trash of this building....either by me, or by our staff guys. |
Nice!!

Oh dear. I found a solution, at least temporarily, for space on the balcony, so no need to sell furniture yet...http://img.tapatalk.com/d/14/06/28/nuvahupu.jpg Dangerous tho... And I repotted some cattelya and chucked out the cattelya I was trying to save so there is still space.... Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |

But in my case, only Phals, simply because they want fewer footcandles to grow well than members of other alliances I grow! And that continues to work magnificently. I would suggest you monitor those you've hung, to make sure each individual is getting the footcandles it wants to be healthy and happy! But you are absolutely in very big (but very happy) autopilot trouble....just saw with my own eyes.:D:bowing I relate! |

Although I know every single orchid in my possession, I do not count them. My kids knocked over plants and tried to cover up. Only to have me go trolling and ask about specific plants |
WOW YOU PEOPLE ARE CRAZY!!! And I, AM NOT AN ADDICT.
At the beginning of the year I had maybe 5...I now have 65... I look forward to checking OB every day. My first visit to Hausermann's I spent over 4 hours browsing most of the facility and talking to some ladies about what I've learned thus far (hopefully I helped!). Last time I was there was only about 2 hours, no more if that. For a while I trolled eBay looking for Orchid sellers to follow, then once I found them I used to check every day to see if they'd added any new listings. Have one pod developing and 8 more flowers pollinated (some doubles in case the other doesn't take). Planning to breed my mini Catts when they come into bloom. A corner of my yard is now going to be designated my Orchid Garden. I can't not check my Orchids every day. In fact, I only hold back checking ALL of them so that maybe I'll be surprised by something the next time. And I get a kick out of keeping track of their progress (using OneNote). I feel the need to tell everyone I've become obsessed with Orchids. I visit the "What have you bought lately in 2014..." thread to make me feel better about the extreme exponential growth of my collection (there's the selfish part of addiction). Creating my own crosses has made me nervous about what I'm doing, I feel crazy, but I am overwhelmingly excited about the concept of breeding Orchids. Having more Orchids helps my addiction because while I'm waiting for changes in one, or several, I can be fussing over many others... 100% serious now, Orchid growing/collecting has helped me find a bit of a "Zen" place. It helps sometimes when I need to take my mind off things, think about something else, just relax. Going over my Orchids, checking their moisture, their placement, their growth or lack of, admiring their blooms is really peaceful for me. Sometimes my addiction is therapeutic... |
I really think of it as less of an addiction, which has negitive connotations, than the enthusiastic following of the spiritual path of "the way of the orchid." Orchids fulfill a lot of needs that many things in life do not. In that sense, I am proud to be an addict.

Three-four months ago, I got my first orchid - I now have 80-ish (it's so bad that I've lost count  ). And I also feel terrible if I don't get to water my orchids in the morning - I guess it qualifies as withdrawal symptoms?

And, when you say ZEN....boy, do I relate! I cherish the privilege of tending all of them! That journey, that process, is interactive, and, for me, reconnects me with what life often estranges us from: The perfectly engineered journey/timetable of living beings....including ours. ---------- Post added at 02:58 PM ---------- Previous post was at 02:56 PM ---------- Quote:

Pls watch for the Fed Ex guy driving the semi.:D And, no selling it to buy orchids! A fine, numbers-matched F-40....they made few and for only 5 years, the last one Enzo had his hand in at every level; the mint ones go for over a million. If you sell it to buy orchids....we will KNOW:dance13: Congrats!!!!:wtg: |
Quote:
And no selling it! I promise! I'll use it to haul orchids from the nursery to my apartment instead (which is, btw, a single-room apartment; 80 orchids in a single room apartment - picture that! ) I've learned there's a term for people like us, by the way. I believe it's "orchidiots". |

80 in a one-bedroom!!! Gosh, that would be a sight. Do you ever feel the need to explain to people just what they're missing?
I used to worry that I wasn't going to have room for the Orchids I was getting, that it was getting out of control and might be sloppy...then I got my little greenhouse and became more comfortable putting them outside. Amazing how needing space for our Orchids puts our minds to work. I have a double-bench arbor in my yard that is perfect for some hanging pots...I so need pot hangers...oh I can only wonder how the rest of the summer will go and gosh how things will add up come winter...as I shake my fist in envy at all you warm climate folks who never have to bring them in!!! (Although I kinda do want to bring them in when they flower so I can stare at them...but then wouldn't I risk screwing up and confusing the plant by changing the environment like that?) |

I wouldn't take the risk of stressing the plant (and possibly losing the blooms) by bringing it inside though, but if someone with more experience than me says it shouldn't be a problem, then, certainly, go for it! :) |
[QUOTE=Kuzuri;691033]It's an L. Purpurata var. striata. Gorgeous, isn't it?
It is BEYOND gorgeous!!! It is goosebump-making! And, I am rarely drawn to laelias or Lcs. |

By the by, one of my very first orchids is one I still adore: lc. Rojo. Famous orchid. Simple, stunning clear red with wonderful form. PS: I grow 90% of my phals hanging. |

K, I am back...found one from last bloom, but it is redder than it looks here. Reds are not easy to photograph, Charles Marden Fitch has written about that. But you may get some idea. ______________________________________ Correction! Was in a hurry and put up image of one of my other favs: Slc. Jewel Box 'Dark Waters" another famous red one I love a lot.....I will now go back and find an image of the rojo! |

I've never grown a laeila species, but because of your stunner, I am now seriously considering it! I took uber pics back in the day when I was using arguably the best single lens reflex (partly automated but, I never used those features) Minolta ever made. But that was long ago. Film...is mostly ovah. Tho wild horses could not make me part with that Minollta or any of its lenses. Neither my sad little Nikon nor my phone can approach what the Minolta could. Course, I am always on the move, so slowing down would help a lot, in making images. I do it only for those who live far away....people who only visit infrequently. DSLR cameras cost an arm and a leg. I would rather spend money on an i7 Haswell chip....which I did. |

Kind of you, but I only accept deserved compliments. Trust me, I have killed my share of orchids (an orchid tending surrogate also killed some of my favs).....and, while, being creative (forget handy), I have potentiated every element, the limitations of my growing indoors are what they are! But I am also not an ingrate, so I am grateful ongoing for being able to do what I have earned the privilege of doing! I do like red. My mom said, in the DELIVERY ROOM, she got I was left handed, liked red....and would never shut up. |

I think I'm going to have to employ more hanging for sure now. I believe doing so would allow me to utilize more space and more efficiently. I think I can get more available light too. :D Actually I just ordered some Kelpmax, net pots, & wire hangers...he he he...
I have Jewel Box 'Dark Waters' btw!! That was my first Catt because it is so beautiful and compact. Now I have more mini Catts than anything else...lol... |
