Which phal and paph would you choose?
Default Which phal and paph would you choose?

I am buying (amongst other plants) a flask each of a phal and a paph species. These are my choices, anyone care to suggest a pick of the bunch and why

Phals:

schilleriana
lowii
stuartiana var nobilis

Paphs

leucochilum
niveum
thaianum
primulinum

Sooo... if you had to choose one of each what would you choose?!

Hanna,
There is phal lowii too, it is pretty pink .

My choices would be paph. thaianum
and phal. stuartiana var nobilis.

But I already have blooming size schilleriana otherwise it would be tough to choose.

I think Phal. schilleriana would be my choice. It has great foliage and lots of flowers. Stuartiana is a favorite of mine also but nobilis is not one of my favorite varieties. I don't have any of those paphs so I really don't have an opinion on them.

My choice would be all of them! But if it was only 2............

Phal. schilleriana - beautiful in and out of flower.
Paph. niveum - so cute, how could anyone resist!

Phals I think I'd go with stuartiana var nobilis. Still got variagated leaves. Also good to grow from flask as I've heard some people have been disapointed with a less yellow one than hoped: so having several might give you a chance of getting one to your taste!

schilleriana is a bit pink for me, though I wouldn't chuck it out! Lowii doesn't really do it for me at all, looks sort of squashed and droopy.

Paph, I'm not sure I'd be mad for any of those! First couple I never really liked in photos, but having seen one of that type in person a few months ago I did change my mind a bit. I still wouldn't call them pretty, but they have a lot of character! 3rd, similar, but looks like one and two gone a bit droopy! 4th... that type of paph makes me think of an especially tastlessly coloured pair of frilly granny knickers. For me it's a toss up between 1 and 2 really: if you like white, go for niveum. But looking at pictures it looks like leucochilum might give you some varied results, which I think makes growing a flask more exciting. Nice leaves too.

Of course you should also consider if you have the conditions to grow them long term...

It might depend on the specific parents for each flask, but in general...

Phal stuartiana var nobilis, though schilleriana is also hard to resist.

Paph thaianum just because it isn't available in the US. Otherwise Paph niveum.
