Default Miniature Orchids by Steven Frownie

I wasn't sure where to post this but thought it would get the most views here. Has anyone ordered the new book Miniature Orchids by Steven Frownie? I got my copy yesterday hot off the press. I must say I'm very impressed. The beginning of the book has a lot of great information on orchid culture in general, and the rest has lovely pictures with descriptions and culture info for lots of minis. I'm very pleased with this purchase, and recommend it. It can be ordered from Timber Press: Miniature Orchids and they are offering a 30% discount off the regular price through 10/17.

Would you be willing to post a list of the species he covers? How is it different from Rebecca Northern's standard volume?

I don't do most Dendros or large, "floofy orchids". For me it's minis (like Angraecoides), Masdies, Paphs, and others that crept in somewhere along the line. See my orchid list for complete collection (usually not current.)

I'll post a list of the species when I get home Ross. I haven't read Rebecca Northern's book so can't really compare.

Thanks for the posting about this one, Terri. I was considering pre-ordering it, but in the end I didn't get it. I would also be quite interested in the list of species covered - if there are enough that that different to the Northen book, I may just have to get this one too.

The index also sorts by ease of cuture (easy, intermediate, challenging), by light requirements, by temps, by bloom season, and by fragrance. There is also a source list for purchasing minis.

Plant descriptions are defined as follows:
Pronunciation, Synonym, Origin, Description & Qualities, Flower, Season of Bloom, Mature Size & Habit, Culture (easy etc), Light, Temps, Potting Medium.

As you can see he covers species as well as some well known hybrids.

Hope this helps.

Wow, Terri! Thanks for typing all of that in! I really like the fact that things are cross referenced not just by size, but by ease of culture and light and temp requirements as well. It will make selection a lot easier.

I think I need to ask Santa to bring this book for me.
