There was bubble wrap... I feel the wrapping on the Wine Delight was a little overdone and maybe caused a bit of damage! Same might go for the Paph, though it looks like maybe there was a hidden problem already.
It might also have been stones wrattling around... I'm really not sure why half the plants have gravel on the top of the pots! What's that about? |
Very good choices!!

The gravel has me puzzled as well, all 3 little orchids had some (though it was mostly at the bottom of the box when I opened it!

Rowangreen- Nice plants! I hope your paph is okay. Looking at the pics of it, the leaf that fell off looks yellowish so it might of just been its time to fall off. My paphs do that sometimes. The bottom leaf will yellow and fall off. The bottom leaf with the brown yucky spot on it looks like it might just be on that leaf and not any deeper. That leaf looks like it could be on its way out too but I can't tell for sure in that pic. If it is only on that leaf you could try and cut the brown spot out or just take that leaf off. Otherwise I think it looks healthy. The rest of the leaves look really good. It has a nice new one growing. Let us know what you find when you repot it.

Wynn, I started a new thread in the Paph forum to get some advice on it before I feed back to the seller. There's a more close up shot there: I'd be grateful if you had a look. I was hoping not to have to repot staight away, since I've heard they take a while to settle after, and I'm new to Paphs, but I'm also thinking it might be the right time.

I also think that your Paph looks fine overall. I would repot anyway, because while Schwerter does have nice plants, their medium is often not the best. Their plants grow well in it, but not once they are at my place! For instance my 2 Phals arrived in a very fine bark mix, with lots of soil like particles. Not good for me!

LOL really? Personally I find Phals would be quite happy to be taken out of their pots for a walk every day...
Re medium, I thought I'd list! Cernua, Wine Delight and cornu-cervi: all seem to be in sphag with gravel on top Purple Martin: sphag, and a very happy plant. When I watered the water just sat on top for ages though so I think that's going to be changed... Max: plain sphag too, but looks a lot looser and I guess fresher (I'm not really familiar with sphag...) Paph: some large bark chunks but seems to be mostly bits of nut shell. I think it might be coconut, but if so it was very small, hard, unripe coconuts! I think some of the nuts would have been about ping pong ball sized... Sedirea: HUGE lumps of bark, cork and coconut fibre. The bark is pretty rotted, but the cork seems fine! I'm currently having debates with myself about the use of sphag... I could re-pot some stuff back in it, since I've got some in, but I'm not used to it, and I tend to find keeping my orchids on the dryer side works for me. I also may have to buy some food in suitably sized pots... Decisions, decisions... Meanwhile I think I'm going to send the seller a quick email just to mention the (slight) concerns I've got, say I'll feed back fully when I've re-potted, and say thankyou generally, especially for the better than expected picta! |
I really like Volker. I have always had great plants from him so I would never encourage you to say anything bad about his plants but obviously you know what you know.
|
Well, I think I am basically very happy. But I feel I should just mention... just in case I do find anything bad when I repot! I think I'll say I'm not expecting to though, because I do think basically everything's fine.
