Default Panama - Finca Dracula part 1 of 4

Another (series) of posts on our March trip to Panama. We again visited Finca Dracula, Andres Maduro’s Orchid facility in the Chiriqui highlands. For those who don’t know of Maduro, he has been breeding native Panamanian (mostly) species and engaged in conservation efforts in Panama for decades now. His son has become involved, and it appears his work will be able to continue. It’s a fascinating place! Since this is a cloud forest area, there are mostly cooler growing types, Pleurothallids galore.

The place we stayed is noteworthy also. A cabin in the forest about a mile and a half (or 2km) above the small town of Guadalupe. We have stayed there before, and will probably return every 3-4 years . . . it's just such a unique and wonderful place.

I did a couple of OB posts previously (beginning of April) about the wildlife there, but a couple of pictures of the cabin where we stayed, and the general area might be of interest. The whole area, especially around our cabin, was absolutely swarming with bird and animal life.

Pictures, from left to right:
• Volcan Baru
• A road in Guadalupe
• Our cabin
• Our cabin
• Hiking in the forest (my wife, Ann)
• Afternoon fog (EVERY afternoon)
• Acineta mireyae
• Dendrobium cuthbertsonii
• Dendrobium cuthbertsonii
• Nepenthes (some of you may be interested in these)

All four posts are just full of fantastic photos, Ed! Thank you so much for bringing us along for the trip! Looks like a gorgeous place. I can see how one would want to return again and again.
