Exclamation NOID orchids

Hi all ,

Always wondered why most of the supermarket / lowes / homedepot phals (and others) have no identification tag on them! Is there a benefit to the grower to sell these without tags? Maybe an import benefit as most are from Taiwan or SE Asia?

I wish they would have tags. Recently, I found a website for my NoID phal and it had a 'name.' I am guessing that it is possible that many of the orchids sold without names might not be registered. Maybe, too, by not using names, they are trying to avoid any controversy concerning someone else's hybrid or patented orchids (yes, there are some orchids that have been patented). These are just guesses as I really have no idea.

It costs money to register a particular grex. If a grower makes a hybrid that is nice-but-not-spectacular, they can still sell it in the pot trade without the expense of registration and specific tags. I'm pretty sure it is a matter of money, and if the profit on registered plants paid more than the costs, it would be done.

There are many reasons as explained. I called a primary supplier to Home Depot a few years ago and was told that producing tags was too costly, they get lost and HD would view a lost tag as needing replacement....and all that entails. I personally believe no tag gives the grower carte blanche to clone any plants without fear of recourse. ( many European nurseries patent their products )

Well i guess i assumed correctly that it could be due to patent infringement issues or just the breeder being too cheap to pay the 10 pound registration fee!. Thanks everyone for your input.
