Default Machiela's Orchids; The Fraud Orchid

Ok, so I purchased the "fraud" orchid from Machiela's Orchids off eBay. It is Paph. phillipinense var. roebelenii 'Candor Red Streamers'... well, as it is thought to be that cultivar... :rolleyes:

Personally, I hope it isn't that cultivar, primarily because I don't care for the coloration and form, I'd rather have another Paph. roebelenii. For the price I paid for it, the plant is a bargain. Seeing the plant in person, I'd be willing to pay more than what the auction went for... there are 8 unbloomed, near mature growths, and I estimate that about 5 of them will bloom (what a show if it's synchronized blooming!)...

Here is a picture of the plant;

Looks good , why is it called a fraud orchid ? might be mislabled ?
But fraud would be if you were sent a Petunia Gin

Oh, there's quite a story behind the possible identity of the cultivarial name ... the originator of this cultivar (Bob Wellenstein; Antec) says the plant is not the true 'Candor Red Streamers'. The flowers posted in the auction were not the actual flowers of the plant listed, but of the same species (Paph. phillipinense var. roebelenii), used as a representative picture.

Machiela was attacked by many people on the situation. If Bob Wellenstein released divisions of his original plant, then it is still possible that this is the actual 'Candor Red Streamers'. It is in the best interest for Bob Wellenstein to deny the plant's cultivarial name, but we will see as soon as it blooms. I am personally hoping for a normal Paph. phillipinenense var. roebelenii...

The auction also had a person make multiple bids in a row. This person may have been trying to pass the reserve price, or just been bidding stupid. Either case, I personally don't see any signs of "shill bidding", or having someone falsely raise the price up. At OSF, it was preached as "fraud", and later the story changed, due to libel. It is wise to not say something definite such as the accusation of fraud without cold hard evidence, and I was then attacked for that view So, this has been dubbed "The Fraud Orchid"...

It is best for all concerned to let this thread drop....after witnessing a couple of 'discussions' on this I really don't care to hear it all over again.

Thank you.
