Never heard of the Kaimuki Orchid Society. I'm brand new at all this. Someone told me at the Kaimuki street fair yesterday (the block party that tied up traffic on Waialae all day Saturday) that there was a Manoa Orchid society, but didn't know there was a Kaimuki one. any contact number??

BTW your interest in my nascent orchid growing is greatly appreciated!!!

It's almost 3 am here, but I can't sleep secondary to pain. but I went on this site looking for beautiful pictures..
Mahalo again so much for the quick and extensive information. You are so akamai and have so much kokua!

As a student, I lived in Pacific Heights for awhile in a lovely home there. In exchange for rent (you know how poor students are) I tended the homeowners' gardens and yard. The rainfall and climate are so different there than in Kaimuki!

Mahalo again!

BTW, isuris 79, in your original post, you said to use wine corks inyour "nesting soil" for Cattleya....I do not drink alcohol, so insead of wine corks, is it possible to use "packing peanuts???" or what else?

Even if you dont drink, you can still collect wine corks at local stores that sell wine (think Tamura's on Waialae). Packing peanuts are also good, though some types dissolve while others dont, so you have to be careful which ones you get. I just like the cork better because it slowly releases nutrients/sugars from the wine into the plant.

I'll bet you are so bright that your mother calls you "son."

Thanks for the tip. I had heard about the dissolving and non-dissolving peanuts before. One's good for the earth, the one's good for orchid growing.

Why would a wine shop have corks? So they take a big cask and pour it into smaller bottles with a funnel? (just joking!)

I repotted three of my succulents this morning using my own composted soil. This is all getting exciting.

REMEMBER TO VOTE EVERYONE!

My Siam Jade cattleya came with a flower and now there is just a "dead looking brown stick" there..do I leave it there?

I will be in upper east Manoa tonight watching the election reports. I've talked with about 30 different people today and no one else is voting or has even registerd to vote. How disturbing!!

I always remove the 'dead stick' for aesthetic purposes. Thats wierd that no one is voting! I guess in a heavily democratic State like Hawaii, the decision is pretty much made and that might dissuade some people. However, we need people to vote on the local issues like rail and Con Con too! Thats too bad that some people still dont see the need to vote. Oh well, I guess some people dont want to have the right complain when things dont go well!! lol

President Barack Obama..."who would have thunk it?"

24 months ago, if someone had said that a hapa black man with the middle name of Hussein would have been president he would have been laughed outside the door.... Massachusetts was voting on whether to remove the state income tax...that has me very interested!

President-elect Barack Obama! Someone should create an orchid in his honor! Something striking and "bluish...."
