Report from Hawaii
Just checking in from sunny Waikoloa on the Big Island. Only one orchid shopping trip so far. Orchids are basically weeds here (especially dendros) and the batch I looked at were way under potted (3-4 growths way outside pot and handfulls of aerial roots hanging outside pots) but I did see some very large and nice Sharry Baby at about $9 for single spike and $12 for double spike. No purchases there. Next week to Hilo area where most of orchids are being grown. I'll report from there after the shopping trip.
Today we had a 5.0 quake just off shore at same spot as October's 6.7 quake. Condo shook and swayed and stuff came off shelves, but no damage.
Happy holidays to all.

I don't do most Dendros or large, "floofy orchids". For me it's minis (like Angraecoides), Paphs, and others that crept in somewhere along the line. See my orchid list for complete collection (usually not current.)

Hi Ross! Nice to hear from you. I'm trying to catch you for posting so don't post anymore until you get back...
That must have been scary to feel the earth move under your feet. Stay safe and enjoy your holidays. Take lots of pictures too!

Wow, that must be some heck of an expensive trip when they throw in earthquakes and all. Will they ever stop with the tourist gimics???
Glad you are all right.
Weeds huh, does that make it legal to collect them?

As a point of reference, my hosts (wife's brother and S.O.) purchased some orchids as "cut flowers" for Thanksgiving and will throw them away when done!
Everythings expensive here if you don't have "insiders" scouting for you. We (my wife and I) are only technically tourists since we are staying in their condo and socializing with their friends (one of whom used to run a local orchid range and has many island contacts).

Hey Ross, thanks for updating us while on your vacation. Looking forward to your photos of your orchid hunting adventures!
Shake, rattle and roll! Seriously though, glad to hear everyone is OK - hopefully no orchids were dammaged.
