Sitting here in the Florida Keys just a few miles from Key West in what feels like a tropical storm. Wind gusts to 35 and torrential rain just going sideways. Very unusual for early May and I hope this is not a harbinger of the coming hurricane season.

Anyway, starting our close-up prep as in a week we'll be heading north for the summer. Great to get back to family and friends (such as it might be under the current circumstances) but I'm already starting to show signs of anxiety about leaving my orchids.

It got me to thinking, if I were to take just one plant with me, which would it be? Obviously in my case I'd want to take a summer bloomer (I don't have many anymore except vanda's and my Brazilian Catt's) but what if that wasn't a consideration, which one would I take? Which ONE of these 200 plants is truly my favorite that I just couldn't part with?

I have a strong contender that is in spike now and I'm hoping it blooms before I leave....it's a little late this year. It's my Rhynchostylis retusa and yet again it's got 2 large spikes.

I'm just not sure.......that's a very reliable bloomer, pretty color and very fragrant but I think the winner would be Aerides houlletiana. When that thing blooms I just stand and gawk at it.

What would yours be?

well let me choose my favorite pet, child and organ too LOL

such a tough call but i would have to go with either a schom or a catt, something that grows fast and has interesting things happening all the time be it roots, new growth or flowers. if pressed i think i might go with Schom Grandiflora
