Something else to consider is speaker price. We tell growers they can either receive a speaker stipend OR sell plants. Some of the California and Florida speakers will ask for both, and we often say thanks but no thanks. Other speakers from other places often don’t ask for such things.

to dove-tail off of Steve's comment. the expected turnout will have a lot to do with that choice for them so it is helpful to have the event outlined and laid out in some fashion so you have a better "pitch"

Probably a year ago the New Hampshire OS scheduled Alan Koch to come in from Gold Country Orchids in CA to speak at our June '20 meeting. Thanks a lot Covid!!!!!! But wait...... we've decided to give it a shot on Zoom.
For those that haven't had the pleasure, Alan is one of my favorites, funny, engaging speaker, interesting vault of topics to choose from and, oh yeah, nice plants.
He even offered up pre-meeting plant order specials to be shipped to the members.
This might be at least a partial answer to my dilemma that started this thread for my job at my other "home" society.
Here's hoping it goes well.

Alan is an outstanding speaker!

We just had our first out of state zoom meeting on Tuesday and it went really well. Sergio Garcia (Olompali Orchids) is a good one for lectures on Brazilian Cattleyas.

I had the pleasure of speaking at the same function as Alan a few years ago. What a nice guy! He has a grasp on some of the more nuanced aspects of orchid growing most wouldn’t recognize.
