Oncidium deformity ?? - Orchid Board

I have had this growing nicely till last week i have noticed the leaves are squenching up at base ,why could this happen , planted in bark , watered often but concerned.

Are you sure you watered it enough? I know I can still let mine dry a bit to much.

Originally it was packed in spag , but the switch to bark purely , may have frightened it , i water every 5 days or so

I agree lack of moisture. I have a little sphag moss mixed with my bark on mine, in a clay pot. Yours looks like large bark in plastic pot with lots of holes, probably drying too fast. They like to stay slightly moist all the time. Watering once every 5 days in new chunky bark is not enough. I spritz my media every day.

It so depends on so many things. I have most of my Catt's in 4" pots in med bark and I have to water them every other day. I was waiting longer and they were not doing so well. I have upped it and they are doing much better. I really think Colette is right as it looks like you do have med bark in there.

I do have bigger pots I only water that much but there in coconuts chips and have been there a couple of years. Time to re-pot then I have to start all over again watering more. I'm starting to get the hang of some of them.

My catts are in plastic airy tight fitting pots with chunky bark and I water less than my oncidium. But an active growing oncidium in summer probably needs more moisture. Probably the main thing is new bark does not absorb moisture as well as older bark, and it just might be that. Until your bark gets more absorbent, you may need to water more.

This "accordion pleating" is commonly seen in Oncid alliance plants that are a bit short on water during rapid growth, or have bad roots. Especially common in cool growing types in warm low humidity weather, but can happen in just about any.

Thanks for the replies everyone , i think its time to give it a good watering , as for the crinkled growth , i dont think it will fix itself , i will leave it be and hope next growth will be happier .

Sometimes if you catch it early enough, you can gently pull out some of the crinkle and it will help the growth open up more. Gentle is the key......having more than once pulled off a leaf or two!
