Cuitlauzina pendula question. Male
Default Cuitlauzina pendula question.

I bought a cuitlauzina pendula at the orchid show on the 18th of April. Never heard of this plant before hand but am super excited about it now. But I'm a little confused

It came with a very small developing growth which has now grown like mad and is about 4-5 inches tall. My understanding is that the inflorescence comes out of the newer growths and at this stage I probably wont see any flowers (which I'm fine with).

I have not watered it since I got it, as I read not to water it until the inflorescence appears and starts to bud...I'm just wondering If I should resume watering now as I don't think I am going to get flowers and the pseudo-bulbs are beginning to show slight signs of wrinkling.

Or should I hold watering for a bit? The plant lovely even without flowers, so I'd hate to cause it too much unnecessary trauma.

Here is a pic. What do you think?

Last year I bought a smaller seedling.
Your plant is much bigger. Cuitlauzinia originates from Mexico and is adapted to an extremely long dry rest period in wintertime. At the end of this period pseudobulbs are badly shriveled. Even then you have to resume watering until the new lead is about double the size of your plant. Only then the plant will produce a flower spike. This is quite a challenge for the grower, as you must be cruel.
By now the bulbs of your plant are fat and store so much water that it is unlikely you will see flowers now. So go on growing.
But in the next winter forget your plant for 5 months.

Perfect thank you very much.
I figured that this was probably the case as it was pretty moist when I bought it. I thought perhaps if I didn't water it I might still trigger it to spike as the growth was small. But the info I read was that they do require a harsh winter rest.

Hopefully next year I will be able to get a spike out of it. Very excited for this one. I do well with Ceologyne cristata and the care and rest seems similar.

Thnx a bunch
