Little Tolumnias growing and blooming :)
Default Little Tolumnias growing and blooming :)

The weather is warm enough and everyone is growing or blooming by the windowsill.

The Pink N Pretty last bloomed in late summer/fall 2011. I had it under halogen lamp (burned one leaf), grew one large and one small new fans, the larger of which spiked in March. It is now in bloom hanging by the window.
It had 11 flowers when I bought it. It now has 9, so I guess my care was not too bad.

I just transpotted two of them into larger plastic pots. not sure how they will fare, but so far so good.

The very last one is growing 8 new fans. Problem is they are all very very small. I mean abnormally small, but many. not sure if that's a good thing or not.

Mines are mostly mix of Pretty N Pink, Genting Sunray, Popoki Mitzu, but I have one Genting Orange and one Tequila Sunshine in spike.

Wow so pretty! I have a hard time with these. Simply put not hot and humid enough here in California. Plus we have poor water quality. I heard they need good water like that in NYC!

Cali is dry, although I don't know figure wise. Mine grew indoor all winter where the relative humidity is low like 40 or sometimes even lower.
I mist all the time. morning, day, night.

I use tap water on all orchids. we have soft water here. How's tap water there? hard?

Tap water here is putrid! Very hard water but varies from location to location. I filter my water, and I used to have a R/O system but water bill got too high, had to give it up.

Yeah, I would totally get R/O system if it wasn't for the high cost to run it. definitely not going to do it for plants unless I won a lottery hehehe

Looks like you're doing really well with the tols. Bloom colours are wonderful for sure.

I get my first tolum mid month - I may need a coach, LOL!

I don't think they require any special care. I treat them just like my other orchids. They all came in this tiny little clay pots with their roots all around outside them, not all, but most of them. I bought all mine in flowers, well, that's why I bought them. hehe so tiny yet so cute!

Once flowers are gone, they put out new fans and roots. A few of mine are so pot bound that I took two of them out of their pots and planted in larger plastic pots.

Two things I can tell you regarding their culture is that one, they need high light. Mine all grow hanging by the south window. purplish cast or dark little spots on leaves indicate they are getting enough to grow well and flower. I kept one under my halogen lamp (within 8inches from the bulb, but lower as leaves grew tall, but at one point it apparently got too close and burned a little.) all winter and it grew well and spiked. It's the pink one in the picture.

Two, water everyday. They are in such tiny clay pots that they dry out completely by the sunny window setup. I water once in the morning and again in the afternoon or evening or when I'm home, mist all through out the day. After all, they need water to grow leaves and flowers!

While they are spiking, buddiing, or in flower, failing to water enough cause premature loss of them all! So remember! they last one or two months in bloom, often branching out and bloom more from the main spike.
