Miltonia Lovely Patty and Kingianum!

So I stopped by Julie's shop, my new found favorite orchid store since last fall when I accidently and unexpectedly found the store.

They carry tons of den. nobile and cymbidiums. Tis the season, I guess.

Tonight, I saw they had little dendrobium kingianum. I used to see them all the time in the spring in my home country, but never saw one here in the US. so I was quite excited to see it.

I bought two of the little kingianum and one miltonia (but I know it should be called miltoniopsis) yellow/dark markings. It is the smallest of this type I've seen so far. Three pb with two to three spikes each. a bit smaller flowers for type, but lots of them!
It did come with a red name tag with some dates, which I assume it was the day seedling was put into a nursery, maybe way off.
then it says Miltonia Mukoyama with some number. I searched online and in no time, I learned that it was bred by Japanese orchid company Mukoyama, but the actual name is Lovely Patty.

All I know about this type of orchid is that they do not like heat. so I'm not sure what to do with them in the summer.

Anyone growing these "miltoniopsis" ?

Nice kingianum! Lots of flowers! I really like the Miltoniopsis though. Really nice pattern on that one. I tried one once, but it was a seedling and didn't do well for me. Next time I'm going to try a mature plant.

From what I know of them, high humidity and water quality are essential. They need rain water, RO water, or the like to really do well.

I thought I would post a better picture of the kingianum. Just two small pots but so many flowers!
and they fill up the entire apartment with hyacinth like scent. nice to come home after work.

Kingianum is such a great little plant, I love it to pieces. Unfortunately I have nowhere cool and bright to put in the winter, so I usually get no more than one little spike...

With Miltoniopsis it is important to REPOT each spring after flowering. Use a well drained, but moisture retentive mix (something like 1 pt med bark with two parts fine bark). Repot into a pot that seems small for the size of the plant. Water regularly with good quality water. Fertilize occasionally with 1/3 strength fertilizer. Let dry down between waterings, without getting completely dried out. Water the pots, not the foliage, unless good air movement is provided. Medium light, house temperatures (55-80F).

We grow D. kingianum outside all year long here in the SF Bay area, great plants!

is in sphag if I go by the weight of the pot after watering. Can these be grown successfully in sphag ?

Yes, but don't pack the sphagnum as tight as the commercial growers do. It takes some feel to get the right amount of moss, wrap the base of the plant loosely and then slide it in to a pot. You should use just enough moss so the plant will stand upright, but it should not be packed in. You might want to put some styro peanuts in the bottom. Keep an eye on your plant and make sure it is happy in this type of culture (putting down roots, no accordian leaves, etc.).
