Default Tiger Crow Golden Girl

There is a small orchid store in my neighborhood, which I haven't visited for quite some time. It was a nice sunny day and so I decided to have a stroll around the area.

I found lots of oncidium intergenerics in the store. Yellow flowers stood out to me and I stepped inside.
It had no tag with it, but it definitely looked like Tiger Crow Golden Girl, one of the orchids on my wish list.

So this one came home. I carried it home with no protection and it was around 3 celcious today. It is still alive after 10 hours now, so I guess the 5 minute cold exposure didn't harm the plant.

It is slightly scented. and unfortunately, some leaves have those ingergeneric dark spots. hmmm

The first photo is me holding the plant on my way home. I got quite a few attention from passerby.

That's a big plant!! And nice golden yellow blooms. I can imagine that you got lots of attention on the way home, you really stick out carrying that plant! Good that the short trip in the cold doesn't seem to have affected it. Don't worry about the spots, Onc types are very very prone to spotting.

It's been a few days now and not a single bud/flower dropped, so I guess they survived the short exposure to the cold.

It does have some dots and I did cut two leaves already as they had lots of dots and some of them were getting bigger fast!

Default An Update...

So I came back to NYC from San Francisco late last night.
I spent about one hour watering all the plants. I was gone for only four days, but all the pots were quiet seriously dry. They are all alright though.

Anyway, Golden Girl's spotted leaves got much worse, so I trimmed off two leaves.

At the time of purchase, I had the store guy trim off one leaf with ugly dark spots.
Now total of three leaves gone.

I believe it's fungus. It spreads quite fast and the spots were getting pretty large (one was nearly one inch in length). nearly black center with brown area growing larger in a circular manner surrounded by a slight halo edge.

Side note...my twinkles are shooting up new growths, but the older leaves are getting plagued with what I believe as fungus. They only had some very small spots last year, but this time, I wonder if the fungus spores from other oncidium hybrids found their way on those little leaves. hmmmm

Whiney Houston's passing is quite depressing and I feel the urge to go out and buy millions of brightly colored orchids to cheer me up.

Default New shoots getting bigger and bigger!

I like how fast oncidium hybrids grow. They grow new shoots almost immediately after flowers are gone. Fun to watch!

I repotted this one recently along with all other oncidium types. They all had tons of roots and I just cut them all in half. not sure if that shocked the plants too much, but so far, they are alive.

Anyone else does this when repotting oncidium types??

Oncidium alliance can grow like weeds once they get going! I know there was a discussion somewhere recently about cutting roots - I wasn't actually involved in it, but quite a bit of debate going there. I sure cannot bring myself to intentionally cut good roots. I know people do it regularly with Cyms, but I haven't been able to bring myself to do it (yet)
