Not very many Miltoniopsis fans? - Orchid Board

In my mixed collection I have 7 Miltoniopsis that are growing pretty well and I am blooming most of them. I like the grass-like foliage, the large, colorful flowers, and the fragrance. However, I rarely see anyone post anything about Miltoniopsis? I am guessing that they must create growing troubles for many? Maybe the combination of cooler, moister growing with lower light is a problem? Anyone out there who likes these orchids or am I sort of alone?

You're not alone! I love Miltoniopsis! I only have one little seedling for now, but that is because I was intimidated for a while about their culture. Some books say they are difficult, but I think I understand orchids well enough now to realize that I have excellent conditions for Miltoniopsis.

I especially love the ones with prominent waterfalls, and ESPECIALLY the ones with blackish waterfalls!

But I think you are right, most people have trouble providing the cool, humid conditions that Miltoniopsis prefer. It is easier for many people to grow their warm-growing cousins, Miltonias. Personally, after seeing how my Miltoniopsis responded to my meager care I think they are quite vigorous and easy.

I think they may frequently get lumped under Miltonia. Myself - I have a few hybrids labeled "Milt." but they have the large pansy type blooms. Could be Miltoniopsis, could be hybrid of Miltonia and Miltoniopsis ? idk
I love them - tho they can be space hogs with all the new growth and massive foliage lol.

I am a HUGE fan of Miltoniopsis. In my experience though, they are quite difficult to grow, because it gets very hot and dry here during the summer. I plan on giving them another try though!

I like them but cannot seem to make them happy so don't grow them.

As you can see, there are plenty of people who are into Miltoniopsis. There are different reasons for why they're not often talked about. It's not necessarily because no one likes them.

I like them, and I can grow them, but I don't talk about them much. Doesn't mean I'll refuse one if it's given to me.

I also have my sights set on a few later down the line.

I love them too, and being in England, they like the environment I can give them!
But, I've found that on this board, if I have a question about them, no one answers. It can't be a personal thing, as I could post about any other orchid I own, and I think there would be a host of replies/ answers/ congrats depending on the post....
Let's start a campaign for our own special little corner

OK - let's post pictures as we get them (someone posted a Miltoniopsis Bert Fields over on Slippertalk forum) and maybe we will answer questions. I grow mine in LECA (Hydroton) and water frequently. It took a little while to get the conditions down but now they are growing well. I think I can give them more light. I have a very nice Milt. Patricia Anne coming in to flower that I will post.

Someone should start a Mtps social group!

I am hoping to get a Mtps vexillaria soon so I will be sure to post pictures when/IF it blooms!

I think I might start a new thread to try and collect what people have found to be successful ways to grow and bloom Miltoniopsis. There is probably a lot of variety to learn from.
