Default Miltonia moreliana

It used to be a variety of Miltonia spectabilis, but has been raised to the well deserved species status. My plant is grown on a tree fern slab. I especially love the light, sweet fragrance these blooms emit.

Here's, the plant and flowers:

I love this orchid, and your pictures just make it look even more gorgeous!
I was looking to get one last year (but didn't ) and it was being sold as Miltonia spectabilis var moreliana. Do you know when it earned it's species status?

Actually, this plant was first and correctly described as Miltonia moreliana in 1848, Camille. Then, in 1851, it was moved from species rank to variety rank due to similarities with Miltonia spectabilis. In 2002 floral morphometric analysis as well as geographical distribution and flowering times demonstrated that the plant deserved its original species status.

No lighting setups, SP. I always photograph my flowers in natural (coated) light in the morning, occasionally late in afternoon if I want to use redder light (longer wavelengths).

Hey Camille,

The definitive article was published in Lindleyana. There is zero question but that it is a separate species. Andy Phillips says they have different flowering season in cultivation, as well.

The species is great but so are its hybrids like M. Anne Warne and the latter may be easier to find.

Hope that helps, Eric

Wow! I really like this one. I am generally not a species person, but this one is VERY nice!

As usual Maruo, a beautifully grown plant and top notch photography.
Thank you for taking the time to post your beautiful plants and pictures. It's a pleasure to view them.
