Mystic Maze yellow leaf
Default Mystic Maze yellow leaf

Hi, im a newbie, first oncid type orchid. Just wondering about the yellow leaf on my mystic maze. Here’s photos of it and the whole plant. It’s potted in bark, perlite and charcoal. Moss doesn’t do well in my place. I appreciate any help at all.
Thanks in advance

Welcome to the Orchid Board!

It is normal for the small leaves at the bases of older pseudobulbs to yellow and drop like this after 9-12 months or so. The plant otherwise looks good.

Ahhhh, that’s a big relief! I am very grateful for the reply. It’s a bit tricky when it’s a totally different type of care to what I’m used to with other orchids.

Welcome.
Your plant looks really good.
Where are you in Australia and do you grow inside or out?

Oh wow, so they must be ok with some cold then? I only have cymbidiums outside. I haven’t felt brave enough to put any other orchids on my very windy inner city balcony.

There are LOTS of orchids that do fine with some cold. (How cold?) Phals don't like it, but there are SOOO many others. Also, if you are growing on a balcony, there is a bit of extra heat from the building, that can help the plants manage temperatures lower than they would prefer, especially when it's just a few hours overnight.

Oh I didn’t think of that with the warmth front the other buildings. Thank you. I feel like they would get better sun on the balcony. I do worry about bugs too. I mean I’d hate to get mealies spitter mites or scale.

I don't grow in the house, just bring things in when they are blooming, but have a small greenhouse, I find that if I have a choice between growing a plant in the greenhouse or outside (a plant that tolerates both) it tends to do better outside. Light is better and air movement is better. Now, I don't have a serious bug problem where I live so maybe it's more of an issue for you.
