Several months ago I bought this orchid. It was outside in a small summer orchid house with partial sun. In September It was moved inside the orchid area. Under light at the edge of the cats 15 hours per day. Day temps 65°+, night temps 55°. Watered twice a week. Humidity now around 55% and hard to get higher although I spray the cement floor daily to keep it as high as I can. It has a few small outer yellow leaves. That’s it. I’ve seen absolutely no growth. What can anyone tell me about this particular orchid and it’s needs. It’s the only one I have like this. If it is close to a miltonia you should know that I seem unable to grow them and have killed several trying. When I purchase this plant I didn’t think about the similar name.

It's not any harder to grow than other intergeneric Oncidium hybrids. 55% humidity is fine. It will probably grow when it gets warmer. By the way, 15 hours of artificial light is more than you need in winter, and might confuse some orchids sufficiently to keep them from flowering.

What would you suggest? Everything’s on the same timer because it’s one room and only 12'x12'.

I don't grow under lights now. I think people tend to use a daylength of 8-11 hours in winter. Many plants are triggered to flower by longer nights, and short nights prevent them from blooming.

No sign of that! It appears to be healthy.

It's not warm enough to grow much.

Just reread your original post and noted that you have only had this orchid for several months, and therefore autumn and winter months. I wouldn’t be troubled by a lack of growth during that time, and especially if a change in conditions is involved.

This is how I grow that plant, I hope this information is useful.

I grow Izumi, as well as many other Oncidium alliance hybrids. I find Izumi to be among the hardy group, if not the hardiest of the alliance hybrids. I grow outside year round, under shelter. Winter temps get down to 6degrees celsius, but average winter nights are probably 10 degrees. Summer temps probably average 28 Celsius maximum, but can get up to 40 for a couple of days several times a year. They are under 80% shadecloth but I have found them very tolerant of light and humidity. .

I haven’t fertilised my orchids for 12 or so months, and that doesn’t bother them either. Likewise, I water them about 12 times per year (the rest of the time they get natural rainfall through the shadecloth), so I really just water them when it hasn’t rained for a while and I notice they are looking a bit dry and bristly. Note I’m not suggesting this as a cultural regime, I’m just saying it hasn’t damaged them or stopped them flowering.

I wouldn’t be troubled by an Oncidium alliance plant that failed to grow for 3 months, in fact I doubt I would even notice.

I think it’s growth characteristics lean more to the Brassia side of its ancestry then to the miltonia side.

I hope your Izumi comes right by spring, as it’s a favourite of mine as it’s a reliable bloomer and I like the muted purple shades.

Thanks for your info. I wish I could grow like you but I’m a zone 6a. It gets pretty cold here. Lol. I’ll hope for good results in the spring!
