Oncostele wildcat? Male
Default Oncostele wildcat?

I bought this as a no ID rescue plant from a garden centre last June so its flowers were long gone. Despite giving it a dose of sunburn through inexperience it survived, matured a pseudobulb and has flowered for the first time for me. The tips of the petals and sepals are green, the main parts are a shiny chocolate and the lip is mahogany with pale yellow to white edges. The first flower hasn't opened properly but the second has. Neither is upright! I'm thrilled to have got it this far and all the more so because I think it's lovely!

It's been suggested that it's a wildcat of some sort. The shape looks right and there are colour patterns that are very similar but I haven't found one that's the same. Any thoughts?

Unfortunately, a lot of Oncidium intergenerics look similar. I will say that I don't think it's a Wildcat as I have never seen one that looks like that and they tend to have petals and sepals that grow more closely together or slightly over lap, IME.

She certainly is lovely though and I wouldn't be at all surprised if it developed a nice fragrance. Garden center rescues are so exciting!

From Googling Wildcat I saw lots of variations but this one, Rainbow, is extremely close. Allowing for slight variations between photos it could be the same. I changed the colours of mine by changing from a back background to a white one.
