I always thought of Hawaii as heaven on earth, but after watching your youtube videos it looks a whole lot more like that other place.

Don't it though?
My same thoughts as I looked at it.

I PM'd Mike earlier this week. He is OK, but did have to evacuate. He returns to his property from time to time to try and care for things the best he can. The people with houses there don't know what is going to happen next. The lava eruption from Fissure 8 stopped a few days ago, and Kilauea Summit stopped collapsing, but there is no way to predict whether it is over.

You can see photos from the eruption here.

The are in reverse chronologic order, and are updated each day. In the left menu selecting Maps will show maps of the area covered by lava.

Near the top of this page is
Photo & Video Chronology
Kīlauea Latest Entries | Search | Kilauea Archive

If you select Search, set the date range to 2018-04-01 to present, you will be able to follow the posted photos from the beginning. Kilauea Archive deals with previous eruptions.

This is a photo from August 8 2018 showing the cinder cone that formed over Fissure 8. It is in the subdivision where Mike lives. The photo is taken looking to the southeast. The vegetation is dead because of the poisonous gases released by the volcano. Mike's house is not in the photo, but was fortunately not covered by lava.

Hi folks,
I received an update email for this thread.
So, I came by to see what was happening.

I am so caught up in what is going on around here that I forget there is a whole other world out there.
Trying to get the county to get out of my life has been an all consuming endeavor ever since the eruption began.
Check here:
VIDEO: Puna Residents Impacted By Eruption Deliver Emotional Testimony

At about 0:52 min into the video Gail and I give our testimony.

I had written out a long diatribe against the county and it's action in this event.
Then, I lost it all after the video link.
I'm not going to go through and do it again.
Just suffice it to say that we, those affected by the eruption, are under attack by the county and its intent for it to profit from this, even if at our expense.
I am not a happy camper.
The eruption is the least of our worries.

EDIT:
If you are really interested in what is actually going on, this site can be very informative.
And maybe somewhat misinforming too.

Punatalk

Just keep in mind that the Puna District is kind of the Southern Appalachians of the Pacific.
I am 1voyager1 on this board.

When it rains it pours, literally.
Hurricane Lane will be visiting in a day or two.
Looks as if it'll sweep the whole chain.

Wow, mother nature is not being kind with you...

And I'm sorry to hear that your local government is making a difficult situation more difficult than it needs to be. I didn't quite understand what's happening, but you'd expect them to help their citizens rather than create more drama.

Thanks for popping in to give an update, and I hope the hurricane won't cause too much more damage.

Paradise is mending.

The mandatory evacuation was lifted.
I move back in Sun. the 9th.
Power was restored Mon the 17th.
Telephone and i-net were restored today, the 20th.

Still have a lot to do to get things back to normal.
We have gotten through it pretty much unscathed.
Our place is still very green.
trees, plants and weeds are rebounding quickly.

While many have lost their homes and property, our greatest danger was the county government and their ineptitude in dealing with the situation.

I brought the cats home with me.
They were and are still ecstatic to be back home.
Have a small number of orchids in bloom right now, and a few more getting ready.
A very few died.
I find that I'm beginning to think about acquiring more.
Maybe in a few more months.

We have a pet volcano in the subdivision that will eventually have a lake in its center, probably not within my lifetime, though.
