Default It's tulip season in the Netherlands

I'm lucky enough to work not far from one of the tulip field areas in the Netherlands and since I sometimes stay in one of the company houses overnight, on Monday evening I hopped on my bike and cycled the 12km to Lisse (also home of the Keukenhof gardens, for those of you a bit familiar with the Netherlands).

I never get tired of the tulip fields and the explosion of colors and odors everywhere. I visited at the tail end of the season this year, the farmers were busy mowing all the flowers off the plants. These do this to fortify the bulbs, much to the great disappointment of the many tourists.

Chances are high that if you have tulips in your garden, they are coming from a Dutch field. I had read somewhere that close to 80% of the bulbs sold worldwide come from the Netherlands.

I can't even imagine how intoxicating the scent from that many hyacinth in one field would be. I'd likely be arrested...the growers would come out and find me lying on a blanket in the middle of their fields.

Great pics, are the blooms late this year? - my garden is a month behind last year and tulips are just colouring up now.

Yes, the fragrance coming from the hyacinths is amazing. You can smell them from quite far away, and when standing at the edge of the field it's nearly overpowering

We're running about 2-3 weeks early this year I think. Usually it's not so green at the end of April. Our winter was quite mild, with a few cold spells here and there, and last week we were blasted by summery temperatures, over 25C. So we've had an explosion of flowers and green.

Love it! My hyacinths are in bloom and the tulips are close. They aren't nearly as impressive as this, though. Thank you for sharing! Just gorgeous!

Thanks a bunch, there beautiful. I think I would have to ask if I could go cut some before they mow them.
