There is an old custom where one buries a small amount of money on New Year's Eve and digs it up New Year's Day to signify good, unexpected $ coming your way this next year.
You cannot spend the dug up money but you can donate it.
I got $1.26 out of my coin purse and am fixing to bury it shortly in one of my larger houseplant pots which has soil, not leca.
It is fun and who knows, maybe it works. I did this last year and have received several modest but unexpected sums this past year, such as an insurance overpayment.

Can you bury it in the snow? We have enough snow on the ground, I could bury a ginormous wad of cash...if I had a ginormous wad laying around. Gives a whole new meaning to 'cold cash'. lol

I think you have to bury it in soil, but an indoor potted plant is OK. And remember, you have to dig it up tomorrow so if you are prone to snow, a potted plant might be best.
It doesn't have to be a lot, last year I think I buried seven cents.

Does cash really know the difference between soil and LECA?

I'm sure that is a rhetorical question, especially for me, as I am less acquainted with cash than I would like to be.
I think if I only had leca, I'd bury the money in leca. But since I have soil, I'm not taking a chance of a whole year without a surprise $ goodie coming my way.

The article talks about a tall dark haired male laden with gifts. That is an interesting idea.
Of course, this is Texas, and the modern world, an unexpected person entering the door at midnight might get shot. Then there is all the aggravation an incident like that might bring. Police reports. Getting blood out of the carpet.
Nope, no first footing here.

My grandparents had a tradition of putting money on a windowsill on New Year's Eve to bring luck. I have no idea of the story behind it.

Nope, we do not do this, either.
