The elliptical machine sounds like it might be right up your alley! I've tried those at the gym, and they exhaust me, but I'm sure you're younger and in better shape than me.

I wanted to second the idea of yoga and meditation as mentioned by a couple others. The yoga, especially, may be beneficial in light of your physical health issues that are preventing you from doing the type of exercise you previously enjoyed. I find it helps with flexibility, balance, strength, and stress reduction.

I have great empathy for you. I, too, have frequent difficulty sleeping. I used to use relaxing "sleep" recordings with great success, but as I've gotten older, I find they don't work as well. It's worth trying if you've never used that kind of thing.

I hope your appointment went well. Constant sleep deprivation is a really tough thing to try to live with. I wish you the best of luck.

Just wanted to give an update. I've gotten off the Ambien and started on Lunesta. We'll see...

Umm... I was reading up on Lunesta, and lo and behold, the FDA has now stated that the dosages taken for both men and women have to be lowered from 2mg to 1mg, because it's been discovered that one of the after affects of this drug is loss of alertness and coordination the morning after. People taking it are not aware that there is any loss of coordination or alertness-everything seems normal to them. Wow. Guess that's also out for me

I asked my daughter, a pharmacist, about Lunesta and she recommends that it is not a good idea to take it. She had a bunch of reasons why, including that there is some suspicion that it may cause death for some people.

Ambien is zolpiden and Lunesta is eszoplicone. They are chemically very closely related. After I stopped taking Ambien, I switched to Lunesta, and I couldn't really tell the difference between the two. I didn't even finish the whole bottle before I gave up on Lunesta and threw the rest of it away.

The only difference I noticed between the two is that the Lunesta made me feel kinda good, sort of. I almost wanted to stay up and enjoy the feeling instead of going to bed hahaha. On a few occasions I even contemplated taking an extra one, just to see what happens so that's why I threw the rest of them away lol

Sleeping pills unfortunately are not the answer.

How so? Anyway, I haven't taken any of it yet. I'm too leery of it. I don't think I'm going to at this point. I question my doctor's decision to switch me to this.

My daughter said that they are all the same class of drugs and she just would not recommend them at all, especially for long-term. She started talking about the side-effects, risks, etc. and...wow. Maybe you should ask the pharmacy where you got your medication if you could have a consultation. Concerning the doctor... maybe you need to see someone who can help you with the WHY behind your sleep issues.

On your specific class of drugs, I found this:

Benzodiazepine - Wikipedia

Interestingly enough, John Oliver did a segment on drug reps or, basically, how doctors are educated about the drugs:

Actually, Lunesta and Ambien are not benzodiazapines. They work in a similar manner, but they are chemically unrelated. The wiki article on the class of drugs which includes Lunesta and Ambien is here:
Z-drug - Wikipedia
