Sedum=Stonecrop - Orchid Board

Hello All, this is not an orchid question.
I've just figured out that some sedums will survive our cold winters here! Since I'm out of indoor orchid space, I'm thinking it might be fun to get some sedums started outdoors in pots. Does anyone have any suggestions for me? Are they all cold hardy? What sort of soil do they like? Do different species have very different cultural requirements? Do you have any favorites? Lots of questions, I'd be very interested in hearing from anyone growing sedums, especially in areas with cold winters.

Just check the zone on them some can go down to zone 5 some are more tropical. usually the fleshier ones are less hardy. they grow great in lousy or rocky soil some spread like crazy. I can take some pics of how crazy mine get. I find its good to plant them in spring so they have change to get going before it gets hot. thats in crappy soil in pots it is not critical.

zone 7 the cool ones tend to be zone 8 the bright ones the ones with cool fleshy leaves.

Check out High Country Gardens. Also the Denver Botanical Garden probably has some information.

They do better with some shade in hot summers. They grow best when nights cool down all year.

The plant with the brilliant magenta flowers in the first photo is a Delospermum, in the ice plant family. A lot of those should do well for you, as well. Most ice plants are winter growers, but Delospermum come from mountains in the summer rainfall region of southern Africa. While you're checking out Delospermum check out Titanopsis and Aloinopsis, two other great cold-winter ice plants.

Where I live, various varieties can be found growing in perennial beds. They die back in the winter and return in the spring. They are very easy to grow.
