I apologize for any misunderstanding.

You had mentioned that two different vendors sent you the same species of plant, although the plants looked different and one had a yellow color. That was the reason for my comment (especially after noticing the structure and color of your second plant).

My initial thought was: your second plant might be a T. streptocarpa (look similar to T. duratii and are often confused with each other).

Far from perfect, but appreciate the kind words. Indoors/outdoors, artificial light/natural light ~ after years of doing it both ways, I can say this with confidence: happy plants are the result of the growing conditions provided to the plant by the grower.

I can't grow them outside because of high summer night temperatures. They use crassulacean acid carbon dioxide metabolism (C4) and can't breathe when nights are hot. I have several friends here who set up outdoor spray systems to water Tillandsias several times a day. They only lasted until it got hot. I might try some again in my evaporatively-cooled sunroom now that I have an automatic spray system in there.

No am not upset or have been upset by any of your comments. The exact opposite is in play. This interreaction on OB is all about learning the how of our plants. The big thing for me is to understand in a fuller way when I receive new info about my plants. Just do not like missing a gem of information.

The yellow coloured T. duratii? I chased back to the owner of these plants. The lady is a grandmother and talks about her grandfather bring in this plant that goes far back and many people have call it T. duratii v saxatilis but they still believe it is T. duratii. They also believe that original plant was the 1st specimen in Australia. This lady grows them from seed.

Back to the Tillandsia that grows high up into the mountains at very high altitudes.

We had some very rare times of dry heat here for a couple of days over a couple of weeks in summer this year.

Believe many mature clumps basically died across all the varieties we are growing here. At the time it was obvious these plants suffocated and died very quickly. 1st time this has happened to me here.

The fire that came very close to our Tillandsia killed so many plants so quickly. It was truly shocking.

I treasure all info that comes my way. estacion seca's info about issues with high altitude Tillandsia not been able to survive in hotter summers has been a total treasure to me. It has stopped me from buying and trying to grow many Tillandsia from high altitudes. If a plant is referred to as high altitudes plant that will grow in my environment. I need to find info that says they will grow here before I buy them.

This issue is very interest part to growing Tillandsia. The journey continues.

Hi estación seca

Do understand the climate within desert regions. We started in the Australian Strzelecki Desert and moved into the heart of the Simpson Desert. Spent 4 + years working in temps up to 64c or 147f but mostly in the 50'sc or 120f to 130f.

Image is my Rig 16 a Wild Cat Rig. An image of my rig.......That is rain clouds. Some month earlier a 19 year drought broke while we were still in the channel country. It followed us into the Simpson Desert.

We don't get that hot. The part of the US closer to the Equator is generally either within 300km of an ocean, or is relatively high elevation. The all-time high in Phoenix was 122 F / 50C, once. We get to 116 F / 46.7C almost every year at least once, occasionally higher a few times most years.
