Default Amaryllis Time

I tried my hand at amaryllis breeding a few years back, and this is one of the results. The display is not as good as some years, but then again, it bloomed this past summer, so I guess it is a little tired. The blossom size is still pretty good. The natural spread is just over nine inches. It also has a slight scent that reminds me of baby powder. There's another one on the way in about a week.

wow, very nice one... I have to admit I am not very much into Amaryllis, but that's a nice one

The only Amarillydaceae I have are Sprekelia formosissima (great flowers) and Hippeastrum papilio, which I have never managed to convince it should flower...

WOW beautiful!! I'm so glad you guys grow these too.
I just jump back into them recently. I use to grow this with my mother many many years ago. Really enjoyed growing them.

It's going to be awhile yet before mine bloom, only planted about 10 days ago.

Ramon, are you storing your bulb after the bloom or growing all year?

The problem I have with H papilio here is that the clone you normally obtain in europe seems to be more or less evergreen and denies going dormant at all. I have cut all watering for several weeks and it did not go dormant but kept growing. I read in some other websites that people tend just to reduce watering to the minimum with this clone, so I did last year (still on it) but it does not seem to make any different... I am a bit lost here

Don't worry about the dormant thing, just grow it as a house plant. Just easy on the watering this time of year or until you see new growth.

Did you buy your bulb in bloom?

Strong lighting will help encourage your bulb to bloom, perhaps even a cool down will help out.

When and how do you break up the dormancy? I have (my wife has) one that's still dormant. I know very little (nothing) about Amaryllis, any help would be appreciated.

TIA

YAY! for big purdy flowers. It's too bad they don't last very long. I had two blooming, then the new kitten broke one othe stalks... on the really good looking plant. The other one I have is kind of ugly: salmon orange with salmon pink blended with a little homeliness .

Hi there. If your bulb is potted, soak it well, and place it in a sunny window. If not, pot it in any good potting mix, keeping the top half of the bulb above the surface of the mix. Water it well, and give it good bright light. When it starts growth, and it might take a week or so, turn it a quarter turn every other day, or so, to keep it growing fairly straight. They can take four to six weeks to bloom once they start growth. If you have any other questions, ask away!
