Cute little budded Cactus
Default Cute little budded Cactus

The purchase of the week is three little cactus.
I have no idea about the names, but at least I had one of this before, a long long time ago.

It is on the top right in the first picture.
I was reminded of beautiful red flowers I used to enjoy as a kid when I saw the one at a farmer's market.
It was budded and it was very hard to resist. I was like, well, they are cheap and small at least.

I found two more budded ones among so many unbudded cactus. Two of them, I believe are of the same variety but different color given the color of the buds. so I'm thinking white, yellow, or light pink, or some totally different color. I grabbed it because I was curious to find out. I've only seen red flowers on this variety.

One of a different variety already has two light yellow flowers open but both got crushed on the way home.
There are new ones coming though.

The bad news after I got home with these guys. They had what appeared to look like mealy bugs on them.
I didn't know cactus with such hard surface was so edible to the bugs.
I took them all the shower and sprayed all over.
I hope all the bugs are dead and gone. fingers crossed.

I will post pictures when flowers are open.
hopefully the spray does not harm the buds.

Time will tell.

I love cactus flowers!
I can't wait to see what those look like in bloom.

I think most of my cacti are done blooming... but it was a nice show.

Many are pretty on their own, but the fact that such odd looking plants covered with thorns make flowers is quite something!

I really hope bugs are gone on mine by the way, and the buds continue to grow and open soon!

What kind do you grow?

If I had more room, I would love to have epiphyllum (orchid cactus). They are my absolute favorites along with skinny long cactus (don't know the name) that is covered with short and very fine yellow thorns. I used to have a hanging basket full of them. They make lots of deep pink flowers once a year. It is quite something to behold, but I wish I knew the name so I could look for it.

thanks, but I can't say that yet since these had bugs and I had to spray them.
I hope the bugs are gone too.... I'm surprised actually. I've never seen pests on mine.

I'm not sure what I grow. Cacti are pretty common here, so I just tend to grab whatever catches my eye.

All my cacti and succulents are done blooming. Except one, which if I had to guess, is going to drop the bloom tomorrow.
It's big and pink and smells great at night. Like Jasmine bubble gum.

Flowers around a foot long.

One of my favorite cactus doesn't even really get flowers. Sometimes small yellow ones.
But it's got these big long thick ridges thorns that I love.
I'm actually setting up a cacti and succulent planter outside atm.

Thanks, I really hope they are gone, but I have no idea.
I keep my eyes on them though.

The cactus you are talking about is Golden something. They can get really big and I believe the main attraction for growing them is just like the name indicate, those bright yellow thorns. I haven't seen their flowers.

Your cactus in the pictures reminds me of one of the old ones I used to grow. It is almost the same except the flower was snow white.

Default One flower open!

I thought it was going to be white or yellow, but right before it opened, I could see some red. It was certainly very interesting.

It opened salmon pink.
Open during the day and close at night.
It was rainy all day today and the flower didn't fully open.

The other two cactus are still working on growing their buds.

So I guess these all survived the bug spray.

Hi NYCorchidman,
you bought one Thelocactus and two Gymnocalycium, one of them is flowering now. Ordphien posted an Echinopsis.
Sorry, but I cannot tell the species.

Wow~ I never knew any names about cactus.
Thank you for sharing the information.

All three are in bloom now and I took pictures, but I'll have to post some other time.
They are all so pretty.

The other Gymnocalycium is red as I predicted. like the one I used to grow.
