Default Petition to save a portion of a New York City forest

Hi all,

There is a petition going around to stop New York City Parks department from paving a green trail called Putnam Trail. The trail is found in Van Cortland Park, one of if not the largest forested park in New York City.

In order to pave the current trail, they will have to down at least 400 trees and destroy native habitat. Most of the park is invaded by foreign invasive species but this trail still harbors many natives.

Once these trees and herbaceous plants are gone, it will have claimed nesting trees for many migrant species of birds such as
Blue-grey gnatcatchers, Rose-breasted grosbeak, Baltimore and Orchard Orioles and more.

The loss the herbacious stuff will also result in the loss of breeding habitat for the rare Silvery Checkerspot butterfly. This park is one of the few spots where it is known to occur in the Tristate area.

The paving of the asphalt road will also result in the leaching of harmful chemicals to the surrounding soils and water systems affecting amphibian and fish life in the park.

So guys, please consider supporting the effort to stop this from happening by signing the online petition at following link. THere you will also learn more about the problem.

I'd support it, Tindo, but it looks like you have to be from NYC or at least pay taxes there. What idiots, though.

Just signed it and will have my husband do the same. I'll pass it around to a few people at work too.
