Default New Addiction: Gesneriads

My orchids might have competition.

I just received this order from The Violet Barn (Thanks fishmommy ) and I'm completely in love with them already! I ordered a motley assortment, 2 Kohlerias, 3 Streptocarpus, 1 Chirita, and 1 mini African Violet.

Here's a couple pics!

I know a few people who grow these. I call them fanatics, because they're even more preoccupied with their plants than I am, and that is saying something.

Cool, my Mum grows african violets.

She has told me they are a good indicator for Phalaenopsis light. They need about the same and something happens to the leaves (can't remember what) if the light is too high or too low and she knows if an african violet is happy on in the spot then a Phal will also be.

You'll love the Streptocarpus! they bloom for such a long time. The kohlerias need a rest in the winter. The first time mine died back, I almost threw it out! Then I dicouvered live roots and I re potted them. Now I just let them die down when they are ready, and re pot the roots in the spring.

Oh yes, I know how addicting bromeliads are. I started with tillandsias and a few other broms before I got into orchids.

Tindo, you made me LOL!

Ezil, I resemble that remark! Except I can be that way with ANY plant.

Gessies have been my new addiction for the past 3 months or so. However I only have African violets. I have posted before in another thread a good amount of pictures. Be careful though. The collection will grow very fast !!!! Take my word for it form one addict to another.

I like the africans, the streps, episcias, and I even have a goldfish plant. All wonderfully addictive because they bloom pretty much all the time
