Night Time Predator - Orchid Board

My son came home after dark this evening. I took him outside (in the dark)

to show him my newest bloomer when I spotted this night time predator. He kept moving about because he didn't like the flash from my camera.

Me too. He has an appetite for frogs and lizards too and my yard is full of them. I saw a black racer in the yard the other day, but he was in a hurry and I didn't get to the camera in time to capture his photo.

That is a corn snake, also known as a red rat snake, Elaphe guttata is it's scientific name. I have one as a pet now, and I've had a few over the years. They do like to eat mice and rats, so be very nice to it.

I didn't have a clue what kind of snake that is. He sure is colorful! I wouldn't want him climbing up my arm but if he's a good snake, I'd be glad to have him around.
