Default Things that make you say "Hmmmm".

This succulent is commonly called a pregnant onion. It reproduces by developing baby bulbs on the mother bulb and frequently produces a 4' spike which exhibits a cluster of tiny green and white striped blooms at the tip.

Today as I was giving the onion a drink I noticed a peculiar purple bud atop a 8" spike just to the side of the momma bulb. Upon closer examination it appears that some sort of Lily with similar leaves has taken up residence right beside the well established succulent. I used fresh potting soil when I repotted the Pregnant Onion last year and have no plants that even closely resemble the one in the photo. Somehow this beauty snuck in when no one was paying attention. Perhaps a squirrel is to blame. They're forever foraging in the grass and mulched areas around my house. I don't know much about Lilies. Is it possible the suspected Lily started from seed?

That's pretty cool. The only lilies I have are day lilies and they have bulbs.....haven't ever seen any lily seeds. Yours looks like it's going to be a pretty color.

Yes, that is a "Hmmm" situation. Could you post some pictures when it opens? It could be in the Lily family, but it might also be in the Amaryllis family. A picture of the open flower would help identify it.

Besides that, I'd say it looks like it's a pretty little thing. However it got there, I'm sure you'll be happy to have it!

It does look like a young plant that could have started from seed. Ants and other insects carry lily seeds and other seeds around because the seeds have a fleshy growth on the outside that the ants eat. The ants get food and the plant gets its seeds distributed.

Yes, I'll be sure to post a pic. of the bloom. I'm anxious to see what I've got....also wondering if the "invader" should be moved to another pot. The two plants seem to be co-existing so nicely perhaps I should leave them as is.

The bloom opened this morning. It looks like a Day Lilly, don't you think? If these only grow from bulbs then I suspect a squirrel placed it there. All I know is ... I didn't plant it.
