Default Staghorn Fern

I just purchased a baby staghorn for my brother for his birthday .. I won't see him for a few days and I am wondering if there is anything I need to do to keep it from dying before I get to give it to him. Should it be kept shaded .. should I water it???
Any suggestions would be appreciated. TIA

They tolerate shade, appreciate modest light (just short of sun) and high humidity (say, like Phalenopsis conditions.) The humidity is pretty much a non-issue for a few days. Don't let them dry out. This help?

Thanks Ross .. I'll keep it out of the sun ( and being a fern, I would think it would take shady conditions) and stick my finger in it's pot and check the medium ... it's been pretty humid here lately so no concerns about that ..

Looks fantastic. My advice is based on personal growing experience, not observations and readings. You should have no problems holding it. Your brother needs to consider really quickly how he will grow this, because the shield leaf will cover the pot (I mean grow all over it and down it) then how does he get water in? I suggest a mount of some sort and be prepared for the "dunking" routine. The RO water with 125ppm Nitrogen many of us use for our orchids will be fantastic for this guy (as it has for my cacti.)

He lives in an apartment that he keeps on the cool side .. should I suggest he keep it in his bathroom as it will probably be the moistest area? It has a window with southern exposure ..
Are they quick growers?
I had seen larger ones on upright slated wooden mounts at the nursery where I picked this one up.

The main room should be fine. Temps aren't a biggie. You should know humidity by now Just think Phalenopsis. Remember, even Phals like a bit more light than often recommended and tolerate lower humidity as well. Bathroom isn't necessary, unless he wants to. The fern has a better chance of absorbing water sprayed on the leaves than Phals do (because of the leaf structure), but isn't necessary. If conditions are just right, they can be fast growers. This would include jungle-like conditions. I suspect he will get modest growth. South exposure may be OK if he has a curtain or window screen. Screens cut almost 50% of the light intensity. If it were me, I would push the light (assuming window screen) and keep well fertilized and watered. I would also get it into a vanda basket (large) with sphagnum moss/fir bark as medium. I would also hook up some hangers that will last a while and then rely on dunking the whole thing in a large pail of RO water with 125ppm MSU fertilizer (you can help there, right?) That will get him a robust plant in a few years. These things are really a signature of all things "jungle" and, to me, they are the best conversation piece amongst the plant kingdom (except for orchids, which are already in bloom ) The staghorns don't bloom, per se.

Nope! Spores on undersides of some of the fertile leaves under best of conditions is all he can hope for. Sorry.
