Anyone into off-roading here? What brand of recovery winch do you use on your rigs? Is Warn Winch highly recommended?

Years ago I was into off-roading, I still own a Land Rover Defender Td5.
I never had a winch but I can tell you "Warn" is a reliable brand ...and expensive too.

I was able to try off-roading before and it was in sandy terrain. It was really exciting and fun.

As a 16 year old I bought a leftover '77 RM250 new in '78. I rode the hell out of that bike, to the point where I completely rebuilt the motor twice, and just the top end a couple more times. I'm generally disposed towards the activity, but since moving to an area where it's popular to the point of people coming from out of state to ride here, my opinion is changing. This area is dotted with temporary pools that don't harbor fish and are critical to many species of amphibians, some of which are threatened species. With the way the weather is running, marble and spotted salamanders, both protected species will be moving in to spawn in the next week or so. A week or two later the wood frogs will move in, followed shortly thereafter by spring peepers, eastern newts, toads, and the state endangered northern cricket frog. I'm not one to mince words, and can think of no more accurate way to put it than to say off roaders shit all over this area. Empty oil and antifreeze containers. Discarded tires and other parts. Soda and beer bottles, food containers, etc. It's an obscenity.

subrosa, that is a tragedy!

is there a local commission or a board of regents that you can ask to even just put up a few signs and some trash cans....it would be a start

It's a rather unusual situation as far as authority. It's private property, part of an old coal mine. However the owner has an arrangement with the game commission that allows public access for hunting. The access roads are all clearly marked "No Motor Vehicles Beyond This Point", but given the large amount of state gamelands I the area enforcement through game wardens is stretched very thin. I myself just discovered the area in the last few weeks, and have started hauling some trash out. But I fear that as soon as the weather warms I'll be fighting a losing battle on that front.
