I've only just got round to reading this article and I'm really glad I did. I read most of it out loud to my hubby who thinks it's really funny how we've all been duped by these orchids.

A really interesting aticle, thanks for posting it Katie.

Default 'believe it or not'

We've got one of those tear-off calendars called 'believe it or not' and each day has a couple of unbelievable facts.

One of the ones I spotted today (actually from a few days ago but I've not torn them off) was as follows...

"The Pink-Flowered Orchid of Yunan, China, grows in areas of little wind and few insects, requiring it to do a 360° twist to pollinate itself!"

I managed to find it in another National Geographic Article! (That was actually what made me remember to come back and read this one).

That article was fascinating! I already knew about how the Ophrys 'prostitute' orchid work, having watched the poor insects attempt to have sex with them a few years ago. (Does that mean that I watched Orchid Porn?? ) The French Alps have at least 5-6 different species of Ophrys.

I imagine that given enough time it will stop producing such large petals at all if that works well enough for it. Very strange, especially after reading about an orchid that purposely frustrates bees entirely to avoid pollinating nearby plants.
