jewel orchids
Two of my jewel orchids aren't looking very healthy. I had them in a terrarium, but took them out fearing rot. I think they have been underwatered since coming out of the terrarium. How often do you water (My plants are in very small pots)? Do you keep them in a terrarium?

Hey Maria,
I never let mine completely dry out. I keep them in a soil that is comprised mostly of sphagnum moss. I also grow them under plant lights. I end up watering about once a week or so.
Best,
Justin

I recently got a few cuttings of Ludisia discolor. They haven't died yet.
Now I hope to find some Macodes.

Both Macodes and Ludisia do well in a terrarium, don't worry about the rot. Evenly moist, high humidity. For me, Macodes does not do as well as Ludisia outside of a terrarium, but I haven't been playing with Macodes petiola as long. I have seen very nice specimens of macodes grown under lights, so I know it works. I did just get a couple hundred, so perhaps I'll get that figured out! *grin* Ludisia discolor will get quite big in a vining sort of way, makes a great hanging basket.

One of the ladies in my orchid club has the most beautiful Ludisia discolor I have ever seen. She's won blue ribbons on it for somethng like 6 or 7 years running!
Unfortunately, she's one of our snow-birds and is not down here for the next few months so I can't get a picture. When she brings it in to the club meeting, I'll be sure to take a picture to show you guys what this plant should look like

Xavier,
I personally cannot post them, but some genera to be considered "Jewel Orchids" include:
Ludisia, Goodyera, Macodes, and Anoetochilus make up the more known Asian Jewel Orchids... some New World genera with nicely variegated leaves include Pelexia and Sacoila ( Stenorhynchus)...
