Misc orchid pics, updates, OS meeting today... - Orchid Board

Because I've been slacking, here are some updates...
Last night around 4am, we discovered our water heater had breathed it's last and spewed LOTS of water all over our basement floor. Luckily we were still awake LOL

and the husband found it. He shut the water off and saved us much more pain. Our only pain now is the $800 bill, not having any water, and having to sit around all day long waiting for them to call and say they will come fix it now *sigh!!*

SO... here's my Mexipedium before

J&L Orchids was our special speaker at the OS today. I preordered this plant based on pics I saw online, but of the 2 she brought, this was the best and I'm not sure why I thought I wanted it now. Except that it's in a 1" pot and so tiny?

I was SO thrilled to find an orchid that was tops on my wishlist so I bought this one too!!!

Mediocalcar decorata
It has new growths and at least one bud... very happy with this one

This one I think I will never own, but I've never seen such colors in a flower and it was LOVE at first sight

Pardon the Snapple machine in the background, this was the best picture angle and since it wasn't my plant, I didn't want to handle it.

uhhhhh...hmmm...dd you just buy all of these today? didnt you say your house was being over run by plant??

I bought 2 itty bitty orchids - the Mediocalcar and the Capanemia. The Mexipedium I've had for a few months now. I don't know what a stolon is lol eek. Tell me.
And the last Vasco Vanda orchid thingy was just shown at the meeting and I loved it. I only bought 2. A 1" pot and a 2" pot I think lol That won't take up any space at all... so there...

Well lookie lookie. I can click on stolon and figure it out! I don't think it is, but I'm going to check. No, no roots on the new growth. Just a new growth....

I love the vanda and vasco cross...very nice. I am sure that it is probably fragrant. I am a sucker for any vandaceous.

Those Mediocalcars are going to be soo pretty in bloom! I've never seen one up close and personal, but from the pictures, they sort of remind me of Touch Me Nots.
Gorgeous Vandas! How do you keep this one happy? I'm not convinced that I can.

Yes, it's a stolon. Or runner. Strawberries put them out. so do P. micranthum, Phrag. besseae and Mex. xerophyticum. Make sure you tack if down (as Marilyn indicates, Tik) so it can grow roots.

Tindo, that Vanda isn't mine. I am madly in love with the gray and purple vibrant colors, but I've become annoyed with ONLY arial roots. SO THERE!! My pretty Rhynostyulis retusa is ONLY 2 arial roots and they are shriveling at a "good" rate. It needs a home in a greenhouse!!!! No, that Vanda isn't mine. Just pictures I took.

Heather, I had a look and there weren't roots, but it's supposed to put them out? I have the paperwork somewhere.... how does one go about tacking things down? I'll go search my stuff for the info... I informally tacked down the last Mediocalcar growth with the bit of twist tie... my Mexi seems like it would need thin metal to hold it down...

Cheryl, thanks for the compliments lol. Know what's funny? Tiny orchids in person will never stop surprising me!! They are always tinier than I expected. I saw my Medio. on the sale table and jumped right for it, hoping it was indeed the one I had been dying for. SO tiny. There is a picture on Ebay of a HUGE one. I can not imagine how many millions of years it will take my tiny one to grow. And yes you should definately own one!
