Jewel orchids (bandwidth warning!)

Some jewel orchids that I finally got around to taking pictures of...

Anoectochilus roxburghii


Anoectochilus formanosum (similar but different)


Ludisia (Haemeria) discolor var. alba


Goodyera schlectendaliana (type that three times fast)


Goodyera helmsleyana


Sarcoglottis sceptrodes (not a jewel orchid, but I grow them for the leaves)

From what I hear they grow great in terrariums. I'll have to try it. How large do they get ?

That is what I got them for...

I'm not sure about the Sarcoglottis, some can get quite big (have a few more than a foot across). That one is a new species to me. The others are pretty manageable. Ludisias are ramblers and can make good specimen plants, but you can keep them in check. They all would fit well in a terrarium.

I've seen them growing in the wild on decaying logs, so "soil" is not needed. Decaying logs offer good supply of moisture and proper drainage. Point is: S/H should work.

Nice small collection od jewels! Have you tried to grow ludisia in S/H?

No, although I see no reason it would not work. They will grow in pretty much anything, and like to be kept evenly moist. S/H would be perfect.

I will try to grow it in S/H. It will be my first orchid in S/H. By the way, are you sure that the first photo is Anoectochilus roxburghii? I thought all Anoectochilus roxburghii should have wide silver line at the middle of the leave.
