Bletilla striata growing in full sun. Male
Default Bletilla striata growing in full sun.

Years ago, someone planted few Bletilla striatas in the flower bed in front of the office. They were in full sun without any cover except a tiny magnolia tree growing next to it and they were growing crazy like weeds. They were also a lot bigger than any pot-grown Bletillas I've seen. Almost 60 cm tall, with leaves almost as long and as broad as a man's forearm!

So last year, the management decided to pull them off to make a room for other flowers. They are still there, but more than two third of them were digged up and ended up in the garbage can.

This is how they looked like last month.

This is what looked like few years ago, before the management decided they were too many:

They were simply magnificent.
Too bad most of them are gone.

As you can see, many of them had seed pods. They spread their seed around for few years so there could be new bletilla plants from seeds lying around.

They'll germinate, no problem. Give it about a month to a month-and-a-half to germinate.

The problem is raising the protocorms.

It's really cool to see how the protocorms germinate from the seed.
