Gastrochilus somai

Though a miniature, my Gastrochiluses hang on mounts in my cooler room, where they receive light and humidity roughly equivalent to that my Phals receive. These things grow quite vigorously, not just the somai, but also japonicus and calceolaris. In fact, the calceolaris has two growths on the mount, both of which are in bud.

Gorgeous plant! I have always wondered what the difference is between Gastrochilus somai and japonicus. When looking at photos they seem nearly identical. Can you see any differences?

I'd love to get my hands on either of these species. I had a japonicus in the past, and lost it to crown rot one rainy summer. I adored that plant, it was a favorite of mine!

Initially I thought your plant looked very similar to a tiny plant that I have, Trichoglottis triflora. The flowers are so close with these two. Both are beautiful little orchids, now I’m interested in the trying a Gastrochilus!

And how's the smell?

I have both japonicus and somai, though my japonicus is still a seedling. However, I believe japonicus is a bit smaller, has a few less blooms, and thus far I've detected no fragrance from somai.

Somai, according to what I've seen and read.

I've seen both. IOSPE says somae. OW says also somae but when you open it's page it changes to somai.
Since it's latin it must be somae.

I do OK with pig latin, but the real language is beyond me. And it's just a name in the end, I suppose. I'd love the plant as much if it had NO name!
