stenoglottis potting questions - Orchid Board

I did a search earlier and couldn't find exactly the info I'm looking for, or I may have just missed it...

I have to repot a stenoglottis machloughlini, it's not overgrown, it just's because i didn't like the pot it came in... it's been sprouting and probably should do it sooon.

should I underpot? or is this something as a terrestrial should be in a larger pot to grow in? I had already pulled it up a bit and it's not a big root ball (it's young).

also I think someone here said avoid potting soil and use fine bark or I think I read even stone pebbles?

Fine bark works, but for this (and other Stenoglottis species - I also have woodii and longifolia) I have found that they actually do better in a terrestrial mix that I make by combining cactus mix, some small bark, small perlite (#2 or the fine stuff), and sand. If you have some African violet mix (has a lot of peat in it) wouldn't hurt to toss in a bit of this as well. This makes a light, fast-draining potting soil.

anyway, do think it's better to keep it in a small pot? or pot up a bit?

how much do you water yours now that they've begun growing?

looks like a woodii or macloughlini, think they're the same... you happen to remember what they were growing in, what kind of light they were getting? thanks for sharing!

No. The woodii and maclouģhlinii are both two diffrent species. Diffrent distribution, larger blooms and woodii is only white, while macloughlinii is pink and sometimes white. The were under trees growing in the rock faces with moss and compost from the fallen leaves.

Thanks for that... I have a macloughlinii (was labeled both) which bloomed pink and is smaller, and a woodii I just got and haven't see flowers yet. hopefully this summer.
