Extremely short blooming Sobrailia? Male
Default Extremely short blooming Sobrailia? (S. cf. mucronata)

I have what appears to be some sort of Sobralia that I've had mounted on a mango tree for a little under a year and was very excited to see it budding about a month ago. It looked like it was almost ready to flower and the next day it was already wilting. So I figured it must be a night blooming Sobralia, like a S. fragrans I have.
Well, last night the buds looked ready to open so I stayed up till about midnight and they still hadn't opened. So this morning I went out to check on them about a half an hour before sunrise and it looked as if they never opened but now a few hours into daylight they are already wilting.
Now to my question, are there Sobralia or related orchids that only open for a really short period at night and are closed back up before morning? It almost looks as if they never opened, but so did the first one to bloom, and it's developing a seed pod, so it must have opened at least shortly.

Most sobralia are very short bloomers...blooms open for less than a day. You'll get multiple blooms over a period of days but each flower is gone FAST. It's why I'm getting rid of mine...it bloomed for about 2 weeks last winter and I never saw one opened flower...only the closed ones. Getting rid of mine and won't take up space with another. With that said, if I lived somewhere that allowed me to have them either in the landscape or in pots year round...i would have them because they are beautiful, when you can catch the blooms open.

Yeah, I have a few Sobralia, S fragrans, which only bloom a few times a year on synchronized nights, S. decora that has showy purple flowers the will last an entire day in the shade. And an unidentified white one that has a similar habit.
The orchid mentioned in my post hadn't opened yet last night and by morning it had closed again. So I'm guessing it only opens for a few hours. I wonder how it gets pollinated so fast though.
Most of the orchids I've collected over the last few years that I started getting interested in them have been natives that I either found on the forest floor or occasionally take a cutting from an established plant. I've learned that most of these "wild" orchids aren't very showy. Though I still get my enjoyment out of seeing them bloom and thrive. But most of them wouldn't be worth the effort if I couldn't keep them outside.

Update-This morning I found this Sobralia blooming. Maybe the cooler rainy weather improved the bloom, no idea. It's not a very showy bloomer with the flower remaining fairly closed and facing downward, which would help keep the inside dry in this rain. But it's nice to see what it is.
In any case, I'm fairly certain that it's Sobralia mucronata. But if anyone has an alternate suggestion I'd be happy to hear it.
