Default Vanilla Pompona

Starting a new thread. Old one is getting long. 2 blooms from yesterday with 'beans'. Usually get 4-7 blooms daily. Hard to keep up with the pollination. Have about a 50% success rate with the pollination from the looks of things with the new technique.

Check out the "vanilla planifolia spikes" post by me and you'll see some pics of the whole plant. It was sold to me as a "planifolia" and I found out it was a pompona after I got a pod. The flowers and leaves look similiar to me. The sepals are slightly green though, no scent unfortunately. It's probably about 20 ft at it's longest length but has several runners. Had a planifolia bloom this year from a single runner that was only 6ft long. The thicker the vine it seems the better the chance of blooming.

nillanut,

that's how I started. found this thing on ebay and it was sold to me as vanilla planifolia about 2 years ago. It has since tripled in size and blooms like a champ. Finally got the pollination technique down about a month ago.

My poor vanilla just can't catch a break. First it grew to about 8 ft, and then my dog came in the greenhouse and knocked over the plant and broke it. Then last summer it grew tall again, and we had a fire in the greenhouse this Feb., so I had to tear it down again and it spent a month in a cold basement and then moved it to a spare bedroom. Finally it's back in the greenhouse and starting to grow. LOL
SOMEDAY I hope it will bloom!!

Is your pollination technique on the other thread?

Nillanut,

Not yet. But I promise I'll post it. It's taken me 2 seasons and a lot of net searching to get it down. Excellent success rate now although it's the last month of its blooming. Only had one bloom tonight.

I'll look forward to it! I've seen a little bit on the internet but it's nice to talk to someone who has actually done it and had success.
