Here in the UK a big thing is made over "Peat Free" potting soil and a reasonable amount of what is sold is "Peat Free". You still need to check the bag when you buy, but it's fairly easy to get hold of alternatives.
I tend to use stuff designed for the garden even on house plants, but not tried it with an orchid yet (apart from this one they all need bark anyway). |

Ludisia discolor grows on moss covered rocks in the wild.
Maybe pumice would be a better choice than potting soil.

Very nice.
My L. discolor is not spiking or flowering but I've only had it a few months. Love the leaves though and it's growing well in a north window with very low light. I also water mine when I think about it and it hasn't suffered yet. Hopefully in the spring I'll get more shoots come up and hopefully flowers from a few of the older ones later on.

Hi Nicole, not detected a smell but then there are other fragrant orchids in the room and I've not thought to stick my nose in this one.
Andrew, I cheated and bought this one in bud. I've actually just bought two more to give away as presents as they seem easy to care for.
