Default Ludisia and a growth in an other color?

Hello everyone,

in the pot with Ludisia discolor is a young growth with a different leaf color. Also the color of the veins is different (white).

See the picture below:

I think this is Ludisia too, but which one? Maybe var. odina? Any suggestions?

Nicole

If it is a new sprout from the same plant, it is most likely just immature tissue. It should normalize.

But, if you sowed some seed in that pot and they are all genetically different, it's possible to have some variation. Are these seedlings or just new sprouts from the mother plant?

If it's growing off the mother plant maybe it's just a mutant? I have no clue if Ludisia mutates easily or not!

I wished I knew

This plant is still in it's original container. The new growths come in different sizes. I have a lot of very tiny growths like the one that differs from the others. There are also new growths that grow faster and have larger leaves than the tiny ones. Concerning these larger new growths I'm sure they come from the mother plant...

I can't see where the different growth sprouted from, I used a skewer to dig some medium away but couldn't find were this sprout originated from. Maybe the smaller sprouts come from seeds?

I guess only repotting will answer my question but I don't want to disturb the young growths at this time. The plant is very happy and repotting it only out of curiosity... nah
If the lighter colored growth is different from the mother plant, I don't want to kill it

You both, thank for you input. If I have news about the mystery sprout, I'll let you know!

sorry to hijack your thread, but i was searching the web for answers and finally found someone with a similar condition.

I just started growing this. but all the shoots seems green. however those that are still unsold at the nursery the shoots are red like the adult plant. (those are grown under shade cloth.)

so is this a problem with growing conditions? too much light or too little?

anyway, that is not where i grow it. I took it to a bright table to take photo.

it's grown in shade, very close to the wall indoor just below a window sill, so that it doesn't get direct sun.

read it's supposed to be grown in shade to prevent bleaching the leaves. but is this too dark(etiolation) or just too bright(bleaching)??

I wish I knew, I currently have the same problem. Mine was in Phal. light and because of that I asumed it was too much for the Ludisia. So now it's farther away for the window and I wait for the next leaves to show up to see what happens. :-)

From what I've read on internet, mutations do happen. There is a natural mutation in the wild known as Ludisia discolor var alba, but it is fairly rare. There is no red on it what so ever and the veining is completely white.
It would be interesting to see how it would grow out if you were to take a cutting of it. But the pic yeast posts seems to show a bit of pink on the underneath of the leaves, and there are several of those off color stems, so I don't think it's a mutation.

I did some online research and found that some people grow it in light as low as 800 lux and even less. Some state that the slightest ray of sun can bleach out the leaves - that is why I cut back the amount of light it was getting. I'll make a new picture soon!

Update

The strange colored new growth came off during repotting. I potted it in a small 2 inch pot. After a few more leafs, it seems exactly the same plant as mama.
About the light. If my plant gets only a bit of sun, the leafs bleach. I should do some reading with a light meter but it gets really low light now and the leafs are as nice as they were when I bought the plant.
