The soil is so poor, I wonder if there is much beneficial in there, unless it shares something with that clump of Statice next to it. It's heavy adobe clay. The plant just appears to enjoy spreading out. The only thing that stops it is the cement walkway.

The nursery I used to work at kept Bletilla in stone chips in trays of water. They're a very good marginal plants for ponds as long as the crown of the plant isn't submerged, and hot, humid east coast summers are no problem.
