I think the something you refer to is the spike. It looks dead as it sits there, then starts to swell on the end. The spike itself is thin like sewing thread!

I don't do most Dendros or large, "floofy orchids". For me it's minis (like Angraecoides), Masdies, Paphs, and others that crept in somewhere along the line. See my orchid list for complete collection (usually not current.)

Dorothy, I am growing in two of them in NZ sphagnum (loose) in tiny little clay pots. They are right under the T5 lights so maybe 1500 or so FCs. They stay out of the direct line of the misters so don't get too wet, just "moist". The third is mounted on a wood shingle with sphagnum and is also directly under lights but gets more misting. Hope this helps.

here's an example of what it can do, using your image:
original on the left, photoshopped on the right. subtle, but it does improve the appearance. of course, the difference is more noticeable on my computer with the higher res version. I used a strength of 25% for the highlights, and no change to the shadows.

Not in the orchidarium. I have several mounted to sticks, etc. using moss and for that purpose, sphagnum works fine. Just not in the windowsill plants.
Thanks for the comments.

Congratulations Ross!! I used to think, once a Dendro killer, always a Dendrokiller. But you have proven me wrong, and give me new hope for myself (even though technically I have never killed one). You know the blooms remind me a lot of Phalaenopsis lobbi

Thanks. That's what I thought too Actually I had a lot of trouble with this image (unlike others in the past) because the blossom is soooo white!
